What Is Dimensional Weight Pricing with UPS®
Dimensional pricing, also known as dimensional weight, is a method UPS uses to calculate shipping costs based on the space a package occupies relative to its actual weight. This approach ensures that large, lightweight packages are charged appropriately for the space they consume during transport.
To determine it, multiply the package’s length, width, and height (in inches), then divide by a standard dimensional factor: 139 for Daily Rates. Compare this result to the actual weight; the higher value is the billable weight.
To avoid surcharges:
- Use compact packaging to minimize empty space.
- Choose appropriately sized boxes for the items you’re shipping.
